Many people ask, "where are Fire Rated Downlights required?" In general terms, if the ceiling you are installing the fittings into is constructed using Fire Rated plasterboard, you will need to install a fitting which retains the fire rating of that ceiling. If there is a living space above, and the building is constructed of timber and plasterboard etc, it is highly likely Fire Rated Downlights will be required. If in doubt, always err on the side of caution, and fit Fire Rated fittings.
The regulations vary very slightly between Scotland and England & Wales, and it is best to consult your local qualified electrical contractor who can advise on you particular application. We recommend that all electrical work is carried out by a qualified, approved electrician.
